Known as "The Mountain City" for its steep hills, Chongqing is located at the confluence of the Yangtze (Changjiang) and Jialing rivers in Southwest China. This core city of 6 million people is the industrial and commercial hub for the Municipality of Chongqing, a province-level jurisdiction (about the size of Maine) that extends eastward to the fabled Three Gorges of the Yangtze and encompasses a population of 32 million.

Seattle and Chongqing enjoy an active, vibrant relationship with exchange programs in the areas of education, arts and culture, science and technology, business, and government. The heart of sister city programs - the desire to further friendship and understanding between peoples - is a bridge to international cooperation.

The Seattle-Chongqing Sister City Association is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) citizens' organization officially endorsed by the City of Seattle. A volunteer Board of Directors governs SCSCA and plans exchange programs and local activities for members and the community.

The character for "double celebration" or "double blessing" has special meaning for Chongqing. The city received its current name in 1189, bestowed by the Song Emperor Guangzong (r. 1189–1194), because he felt blessed when he ascended to the throne.
